Operations

RES’s sugar manufacturing comprises the Mhlume and Simunye sugar factories, and a back-end sugar Refinery at Mhlume. The Mills collectively crush up to 3.6 million tons of cane per annum.

Mhlume Factory

The Mhlume mill is a dual tandem, with a milling tandem designed for a capacity of 175 tchr and a diffusion tandem with a capacity of also 175tchr. The combined capacity of 350 tchr is sufficient to process about 1 600 000 tons of cane in a season. The mill receives about a third of its cane from RES Estates, as a Miller Cum Planter, and the balance from various other Independent Growers and Managed Farms.

All the cane is delivered by road.
The Mhlume factory is the oldest, having come into operation in 1960 with an initial crush capacity of 90 tchr in a milling tandem, which was latter increased to 175 tchr.   In 1980 the factory was expanded through the addition of a 175 tchr BMA diffuser line, to run alongside the original milling train.

In 1996, a back-end sugar Refinery was added to the Mhlume factory with a design capacity of 90 000 tonnes of refined sugar per season. The refinery has since been expanded to its present capacity of 170 000 tonnes of high quality refined sugar per season.
At the same time the refinery was built, the Eswatini Sugar Association (ESA) constructed a sugar Conditioning Tower and a sugar storage Warehouse with a capacity of 40 000 tonnes. The capacity of the Warehouse has since been doubled to the present capacity of 80 000 tonnes, and an additional conditioning silo of 1 200 tonnes was constructed in 2003.
