RES AWARDS SKILLED EMPLOYEES

In a groundbreaking programme that seeks to recognise workplace experience, Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation (RES) held an event to officially recognise employees without formal education beyond high school certificate.

The employees were awarded with certificates of recognition through a programme known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The recognition ceremony said to be a milestones in the company's efforts to empower workers, was held at Thembelisha Hall in Simunye.

A total of 81 employees from different departments were awarded with RPL certificates, which are equivalent to a Form V certificate.

The event which was hosted by RES Managing Director, Nick Jackson was graced by officials from Sebenta National Institute and management.

When making his remarks, the MD said the decision to introduce the RPL programme came from the company's desire to ensure fairness and recognise talent that had long gone unnoticed due to lack of formal education.

He noted that many employees who joined the company without formal education gained a lot of experience and skills in their various departments.

With the experience they have gained over the years, the MD said they were competent in their various departments such that they could do work which required a certain level of education.

He noted that however, these workers remained at a disadvantage when vacancies for higher positions opened, due to the requirements that would be attached to the post.

He stated that some of the posts would require a Form V certificate, something which most of the now skilled and experienced employees did not have. With the RPL certificate, the experienced employees can now apply for positions.

“This programme is our way of saying that hard work and commitment deserve recognition.”, said the MD.

Jackson commended the 81 employees for their hard work, describing them as pioneers and examples of perserverance. . He stated that their dedication and improvement in their skills was proof that learning was a daily process that never comes to an end.

He noted that some of the employees had been with the company for many years and their contribution has been remarkable.

“You have earned this recognition through years of service and excellence, and we're proud of you, "the MD added. The RPL programme is also supported by Sebenta National Institute, and it allows employees to have their practical skills and knowledge assessed and certified.

Sebenta National Institute CEO, Thembinkosi Mamba applauded the corporation for the initiative, saying it sets a national precedent. . "RES has demonstrated that valuing people's experience is just as important as valuing their education.

We encourage other companies to follow this example and recognise the potential within their own workforce.", said Mamba.

Speaking on behalf of the employees, Mlandvo Hlatshwako under the Agriculture department said the recognition would go a long way in boosting their confidence in their work.

Hlatshwako said the recognition was more of a reward that also challenged them to work even harder.

Themba Masilela under the Water Resources Conveyance department also shared similar, adding that the recognition was an indication that the company appreciated their contribution over the years.

Adding, Siphiwe Mthimkhulu said that this was a life-changing experience as they would now be able to apply for higher positions with their RPL certificates.
