RES CORP COMMISSIONS THREE MARKET SHELTERS

Simunye – The Royal Eswatini Sugar (RES) Corporation has commissioned three (3) community market shelters within the RES fence line boundaries, namely, Mzaceni, Mhlume and Manjengeni respectively, benefiting at least 10 – 15 women per location.

The project was commissioned by RES Corporation Managing Director Nick Jackson. Also present during the commissioning was Operations Manager, Patrick Myeni and Corporate Social Investment Manager, Phindile Lukhele-Dlamini among other senior staff members. Ian Boyd represented Swazi Trac, a company that was said to have played a major roloe in the successful construction of the market shelters.

The construction of the community market shelters was said to be part of the company's Corporate Social Investment (CSI) fthrough partnerships with the communities in which it operates.

In his remarks, the MD said this was an acknowledgement that the comapny did not not operate in isolation. Jackson said the company operated within a community, therefore, was mindful of these communities being key stakeholders in the value-sharing agenda. He said it was for this reason that the company intends to strengthen relations through such targeted engagements.

To-date, the three (3) markets being commissioned today, total seven (7) shelters constructed by RES in the last 2 years, with the help of RES partners such as Standard Bank Eswatini and Swazi Trac to name a few.

“We are very excited to be a part of this great initiative by RES and we thank them for affording us the opportunity to join hands to make today the success that it is. We look forward to partnering again in the future to make a difference together.”, said Ian Boyd in his remarks.

The shelters can accommodate 10 – 15 women, affording them a better chance at success of their small enterprises. The improved structures will protect them from adverse weather conditions that previously negatively impacted their businesses.

These market shelters are evidence that empowering women uplifts societies at multiple touch points such as that of manning households single handed at times and raising children with proceeds from their produce, exposed to harsh and adverse weather conditions they would survive under.

On behalf of the vendors, make Dumsile Magagula said that they wer very happy that they would now do their business under an improved environment. “We're very grateful because even the sales of our produce will improve now that they sell under decent shelter," she said. Magagula assured the company management that they will ensure that the market shelters are well maintained and habitable for the next many years.

In closing, RES Operations General Manager, Patrick Myeni urged members of the communities to remember that our mutually beneficial partnership continues. Communities around us help us because from them comes a majority of our workforce and that obligates the company to give back to the community. We need each other.”, he said.
