RES, NDMA TO THE RESCUE

To assist families who suffered the effects of the recent cyclone, the NDMA, in partnership with Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation (RES), has constructed 57 houses and rehabilitated two.

The Tropical Cyclone Eloise left a trail of destruction in the country with over 1000 people who were rendered homeless following the heavy rains.

Displaced

There were 105 people who were also displaced at Game 5, a tiny village around Big Bend and were evacuated to a local police station, while means to place them in a safe place were being made.

The organisations also assisted communities at risk with sustainable, safe water through the drilling of two new boreholes at Sitsatsaweni and Malindza communities.

The project cost E139 372.56 for the two boreholes.

NDMA is an acronym for the National Disaster Management Agency. Communications Manager Wandile Mavuso said they provided two hand pumps for the project, while the RES Corporation funded the rest of the expenses.

Mavuso said residents of the two communities had been without clean potable water for years and were subjected to sharing water with livestock. He said the project was expected to benefit 1461 residents from the two communities.

“A total of 910 residents from Sitsatsaweni will benefit and 551 in Malindza,” he said.

According to Mavuso, they have also been distributing running water to clinics and communities in the country’s four regions for hand-washing as per the Ministry of Health’s advice to avoid contracting the COVID-19 virus.

Distributed

In the Hhohho Region, a total of 21 000 litres were distributed, 50 000 litres were distributed in the Shiselweni Region and 10 000 litres in the Manzini Region.

Meanwhile, he said the rehabilitation of roads and bridges damaged by the heavy rains was already underway. “Government is determined to restore normalcy in affected communities,” he said
