We partner to bring water to 600 homesteads

The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation (RSSC) and partners over the weekend provided water relief to about 800 homesteads at Sigcaweni and Mathanjeni community under Mpolonjeni constituency.

The organizations provided a borehole to each community, enhancing the availability of potable water to 800 homesteads. These are communities which have seen a serious shortage of clean water in the past seasons.  The kind gesture by the organizations, therefore, comes as a major relief to the hundreds of residents. In a press release, NDMA Communications Manager Setsabile Sibisi disclosed that the organizations initially came together to participate in a sporting activity which was aimed at enhancing their business partnership.
However, it eventually emerged that that the same platform could be used to benefit needy communities through rendering charity work. It was revealed that the sugar company hosts a golf tournament on an annual basis.
Sibisi said the organizations agreed to utilize last year’s proceeds to improve water accessibility to the communities which were said to have been hit hard by water storages. “This is one project which affirms that RSSC is not just a sugar company which is concerned about making profits but also caters for the livelihood of the surrounding communities.” RSSC MD Nick Jackson was quoted as having said during the commissioning of the two boreholes in the communities.
Meanwhile, Sibisi also asked the communities to manage the boreholes well so that they may never again have to face challenges of accessibility to clean water. Sibisi said they were hoping to return to the same communities in future to assist on social issues. Other companies which partnered with RSSC and NDMA included GALP Swaziland, Augusta and Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC).
